Besides its scenic villages and art cities, Tuscany is well-known worldwide for its revered wines, which have an age-old tradition and many awards to support their undisputed fame. The best wine tasting in Siena, Italy, or at least the one we would suggest to all our guests, can be enjoyed in Le Chiuse, a farm and renowned winery in Montalcino. Here, together with a tour of the estate, you will learn a lot about Brunello and sip this delicious wine in its homeland.
But before diving into the details of what to expect when visiting Le Chiuse, let us gather some information on Tuscan wines and discover why they are so valuable and appreciated.
The history of Wine in Tuscany
The history of Tuscan wines begins 3000 years ago with the Etruscans. They turned wine-making into an essential part of their culture. Romans and then Benedictine monks expanded this tradition which, however, represented a necessity of the culture of those times. Wine, in fact, was considered a need for survival due to the shortage of healthy drinking water.
However, back then, Tuscan wines were nothing like the delicate nectar we know today. Especially now that the Sangiovese grapes are grown to produce a robust and flavoured wine in the Montalcino and Montepulciano areas, and it is right here that tourists can experience the best wine tasting in Siena.
Wine tasting tours in Siena: discover Brunello di Montalcino
This well-known wine is an enchanting product made with 100% Sangiovese grapes. The Brunello produced at Le Chiuse has outstanding quality, to best describe the spirit of this winery. In 2021, the 2016 vintage ranked #5 among in the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines List, and #2 in the Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Cellar Selection.
During your wine tour you will discover that Brunello di Montalcino is made using only small to medium-sized grape bunches. Their fermentation takes place in stainless steel and cement fermenters only using indigenous yeasts. The objective is to create a wine that carries the aroma and flavour of the area. For this reason, Brunello di Montalcino is always aged in 30-hectoliter Slavonian Oak barrels for about three years. Before being bottled, Brunello is transferred to concrete tanks to await the DOC and DOCG certification. After the filtration process, it is bottled and put to rest for another ten months to produce Brunello di Montalcino and five years for the Riserva version.
